The first professional boxer from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, bantamweight Kim Hyok Jun, will be seen in action today at the open-air ring of the Santirat Vitayalai at Ratchawithi Road. Kim will vie for the WBC interim youth bantamweight title, held by Thailand's Fahpetchnoi Sor Chitrpatana.
Yesterday, both fighters passed their medical examinations at the Phyathai Hospital and Dr Tui Rungcharoen who examined them said that they were in fine condition to produce a good fight. At the weigh-in which followed, both tipped the scales at 53.5 kilogrammes.
The fight takes place this afternoon at 3pm and a large crowd of schoolboys from the Santirat Vitayalai are expected to witness the contest.
Mr Chusak Sirinin, Minister of the Prime Minister's Office, will be chief guest.
The manager of the Korean fighter, Kim Won Chol, said through a South Korean interpreter that many boxers, both men and women, are taking to professional boxing.
''I am sure Kim Hyok Jun will give a good account in this fight. He is tough and strong like all DPR Korean fighters.''
He added on his showing more DPR Korean fighters, both men and women, will be invited to fight in Thailand and elsewhere.
