It is sad that Thailand is still mired in conflict, with no end in sight. All attempts _ through parliament or the judiciary _ have failed. The recent clash between anti-government demonstrators led by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and government supporters did not augur well for our democratic system.
The conflict is too deep to heal in a short period of time. Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Anupong Paojinda has been reluctant to use force. He believes members of parliament must solve this political crisis by themselves.
The country is in a dead end because the two sides have refused to back down. Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has repeatedly insisted he will not step down or dissolve the House.
Enforcement of the emergency decree is not going to solve the problem either. Look at the troubled deep South. A state of emergency has been in force there for several years, but the insurgents are continuing their acts of terror almost every day.
The mass media are also to blame for the escalation of the conflict. They have taken sides, ignoring their duty to present both sides of the issue.
The government itself does not recognise the importance of ''people's politics,'' branding the demonstrators as ''sidewalk hoodlums.''
